Nano brows: the most natural of the three
Soft nano brows are created with a rotary machine and a single ultra-fine needle. Each stroke is deposited individually, following the direction your own brow hair already grows. Because the needle is finer than a microblading tool and the machine controls depth precisely, the skin is disturbed far less.
That matters for two reasons. First, less trauma means cleaner healing and no scarring. Second, the strokes stay crisp instead of blurring into a shadow as they fade, which is the most common complaint about older brow tattoos.
Nano is the technique to pick if your brows are sparse at the tails, if the two sides do not match, or if you have tried a brow pencil every morning for years and want that time back. It is also the safest choice for sensitive, thin, or mature skin.
Microblading: the original hair stroke technique
Eyebrow microblading uses a handheld blade made of tiny needles to cut fine strokes into the skin and deposit pigment. It is the technique that made permanent brows popular, and in the right skin it still produces beautiful, sharp, natural strokes.
The limitation is skin type. On oily skin the strokes tend to spread and soften faster, because the extra sebum pushes pigment sideways in the healed skin. If your face gets shiny by midday, microblading is usually not the technique that will serve you longest.
Microblading suits clients with normal to dry skin who want a hair stroke look and prefer a minimal-makeup appearance.
Powder brows: soft shading that holds up longest
Powder brows, also called ombre brows, build up thousands of tiny pigment dots into a soft gradient rather than individual strokes. The colour starts lighter at the front and deepens toward the tail, which reads as a softly filled-in brow rather than as separate hairs.
Because the pigment sits as shading instead of fine lines, powder brows are the most forgiving technique on oily skin and the one that keeps its shape longest between touch-ups. They are also the natural choice if you already wear brow powder or pomade daily and like that finish.
Which technique suits your skin type
Oily skin: nano brows or powder brows. Skip microblading.
Normal to dry skin: all three work. Choose by the finish you want.
Sensitive, thin or mature skin: nano brows, because it is the gentlest of the three.

How long each one lasts
Permanent makeup is not permanent in the literal sense. Pigment fades as your skin renews itself, and how fast depends on your skin type, your aftercare, and how much sun you get.
Nano brows: roughly 1 to 3 years.
Microblading: roughly 1 to 2 years, shorter on oily skin.
Powder brows: typically the longest of the three, especially on oily skin.

What a nano brows result actually looks like
The before and after at the top of this page is a real nano brows client, photographed in the same spot, same light, same day framing. Look at what changed and what did not.
Before: the brow heads are reasonably full, but both tails thin out and stop short, and the right brow sits lower through the arch. That asymmetry is extremely common and is usually the thing people notice about their own face without being able to name it.
After: the tails are carried through to where they should end, the arches are level, and the density is even from head to tail. What did not change is the character of the brow. It is still recognisably her brow shape and her hair colour, just finished. That is the whole point of the technique. If a before and after makes the client look like a different person, something went wrong.
If you already have brows you do not love
Old work does not have to be a dead end. Faded, too-warm, too-thick or asymmetrical previous permanent makeup can often be reshaped and re-toned rather than removed. That is what permanent makeup correction is for, and it is a large part of what walks through the door in West Roxbury.
