Afraid of Permanent Makeup? What Has Changed

"What if I don't like it, and I have to live with it forever?" This is the question I hear more than any other. And almost always there is a real story behind it: a bad experience of your own, a mother whose brows turned blue over the years, or a friend who ended up with brows that were too dark and too thick.

These fears make sense. But they belong to permanent makeup as it was fifteen or twenty years ago. Let's go through them one by one and look at what has changed since then. The collage at the top of this page shows it in one picture: old-style permanent makeup three to four years after it was done, and my work fresh and fully healed a year and a half later.

"It Stays Forever"

It does not. Old brow tattoos were done deep, like a regular tattoo, which is why so many people still have them on their faces decades later. Modern permanent makeup is placed in the upper layer of the skin, and the skin gradually carries it away. Brows last one to three years, lips two to three years, and the lash line longest of all. After that the color softens, and you decide whether to refresh it or not. More detail is in how long does permanent makeup last.

"My Brows Will Turn Blue or Orange"

Blue and gray appear when pigment is placed too deep, or when old pigments are used that break down unevenly. Today I work with REACH-certified pigments at the right depth. The color is matched to your skin tone and hair, not picked from a one-size-fits-all palette. Over time it gets lighter, but it stays in its own shade.

"I'll End Up With Thick Black Brows"

Thick, solid, single-color brows were the fashion and the technique of the early 2000s. Today there are techniques that look like your own brows:

  • Nano brows: fine hair strokes placed with a machine in the direction your own hair grows. People take them for real brows.

  • Powder brows: soft shading, as if you had lightly filled your brows in with powder.

The goal is not to draw new brows. It is to finish your own: fill the gaps, even out the asymmetry, extend the tails.

"It Won't Be What I Wanted"

Nothing happens until you agree. First I draw the shape on your face in pencil. You look in the mirror, we adjust it if needed, and only after your yes do I start. For the lash line, I show you the result on your own eyelid at the consultation with a method that washes off, so you see it before the procedure. That is covered in more detail in our lash line enhancement guide.

The procedure is also always done in two stages. Four to eight weeks after the first session comes the perfecting session, where density and color can be fine-tuned.

"I've Seen How It Looks on My Friend"

You may have seen permanent makeup in the first days after the procedure, when it is brighter and darker than it will be. Or work that was done many years ago. Healed modern work looks far softer. At conversational distance most people cannot tell that anything has been done, and that is exactly what we aim for.

"I Already Have Permanent Makeup I Don't Like"

That can be fixed. Old gray or blue color can be neutralized and new brows built on top, which is what permanent makeup correction is for. If the pigment is too dark or the shape is simply not yours, it is removed first and the new work comes after. Old permanent makeup can be removed with either saline or laser. Which situation you are in, and which method will remove your pigment best, we will tell you at the consultation. A real correction case is in brow tattoo color correction.

"What If It Doesn't Suit Me?"

Then I will tell you. Not every technique suits every skin, and sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need it. That is what the consultation is for. Phone and online consultations are free. An in-studio consultation is $50, and if you book the procedure, it is deducted from the price.

Why You Can Trust Me

I perform every procedure myself, from the consultation to the perfecting session. I have over eight years of experience in permanent makeup and thousands of procedures behind me. Single-use sterile needles, certified pigments, a licensed studio in West Roxbury.

Permanent makeup should not be a decision you put up with afterwards. It should save you time every morning and look as if you simply had a good night's sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is permanent makeup permanent?

No. Brows last one to three years, lips two to three years, and the lash line longest of all. After that the color fades.

Will my brows turn blue over time?

Not if the pigment is good quality and placed at the right depth. The color gets lighter within its own shade.

Can I see the result before the procedure?

Yes. I draw the brow and lip shape on your face before any work starts, and I show the lash line with a wash-off method at the consultation.

What can I do about old permanent makeup I don't like?

It can be corrected, or removed with saline or laser, and then new work can be done. Which method suits you, we will tell you at the consultation.
